Why your curly hair is always dry: it's not nature, it's geometry

On can run a hand through it without snagging on wash day. Three days later, the same hair crunches under your fingers and the comb pulls out fragments. This recurring dryness has a specific cause.

The explanation that is everywhere is three words long: they are dry by nature. It has the flaw of leaving nothing to do, and it is inaccurate. Studies that compared African, Asian, and European fibers under a microscope found no difference in their internal structure: what changes is the geometry of the fiber, its mechanical behavior, and the way it swells when it comes into contact with water (Franbourg et al., Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, 2003). The problem is not in the material, it is in the shape, and a shape can be worked. To guide your actions, our step-by-step tutorial details the six steps of the Rituel Texture®.

The mechanismWhat the spiral changes in the path of sebum

The treatment travels the path that sebum does not, all the way to the ends.

In the Rituel Texture®, we distinguish dry hair from hair that no longer moves. Many of my clients arrive with the latter, a frozen material that no longer follows the hand. At the end of the session, the hair moves again from the root, and it is always the same phrase that comes back: my scalp feels light.

Ghana Elin, founder

Curly hair does not come straight out of the scalp: it coils from the root and twists along its entire length, to the point that microscopy studies describe it as a tight spring. This shape gives the volume and hold of a sculpted hairstyle. It has a downside: sebum travels along the fiber by simple contact, and on a coiled fiber it finds no slope to follow. The British Association of Dermatologists writes it bluntly in its patient information sheet: sebum does not circulate easily along the length, and the fiber is therefore more exposed to breakage.

The same microscopy explains the rest. On the curly hair examined, knots form on 10 to 16 % of the hairs, compared to 0.15 % of straight hair, and the shafts bear the trace of repeated breakages (Khumalo et al., 2000): the hairs snag on each other instead of sliding. Hence comes a confusing picture, that of hair greasy at the root and rough at the ends, which gives way the moment you think you are simply styling it. This is not a contradiction, it is the consequence of sebum that stays at the top. We return to this spiral shape in why we have curly hair.

The principleHydrating means providing water, not grease

The point that most habits miss can be summed up in one sentence: an oil does not contain water. A fatty substance slows the evaporation of the water already present, nothing more. Applied to dry hair, it locks in the dryness under a shiny surface.

Water, however, enters during washing, when the fiber is saturated and its surface lifts. This is why deep treatment is never applied anywhere else. The Repair Mask works there, on towel-dried hair, heated between the hands, section by section. Ten minutes of leave-in time is enough, under a shower cap if you have one. Then The Styling Cream, on damp hair, helps maintain the hydration provided during washing.

If your hair is dry the day after a treatment, it is not that a product is missing: it is that the water never entered.

A drop of light oil still has its use, but not in this place: on the ends, between two routines. The weekly oil bath, on the other hand, saturates the fiber without ever rehydrating it; once or twice a year at most is enough. See the light oils that do not weigh down and the method in hydrating and maintaining hydration.

The diagnosisRecognizing a fiber that lacks water

You must first be sure of what you are correcting. Dryness is confused with two states that call for opposite responses: an excess of proteins, which stiffens the fiber, and a buildup of products, which weighs it down. Three observations are enough to decide, on a strand from the nape of the neck.

To the touch, a strand that lacks water crunches instead of sliding and remains rough even after a treatment. A fiber loaded with products appears smooth but heavy, almost waxy near the roots, and the finger passed at the base comes back sticky.

When stretched, on wet hair, a hydrated fiber elongates a little then returns to its place, while a dry fiber breaks cleanly. A fiber saturated with proteins also breaks, but with a stiffness that is felt as soon as you pick it up: it is then the strengthening treatments that need to be spaced out, not the water that needs to be increased.

Finally, in the comb, a hair that has fallen naturally carries a small white bulb at its end. The short fragments that do not have one are hairs broken along the way, and it is the best indicator you had: it distinguishes a fall from a breakage.

These signs appear first where the fiber is oldest: the ends whiten, thin out, and give way before the rest, as detailed in protecting the ends. When breakage is regular along the entire length, the hair seems to stagnate, and the difference in length between two women has much more to do with breakage and shrinkage than with growth speed. There remains porosity: it does not change the principle, only the dosage.

The causesWhat perpetuates dryness without us seeing it

Detangling curly hair section by section
Detangling with the fingers, on dry hair, opens the Rituel Texture®. The Man Dol' Comb only comes into play after The Repair Mask.

Dampening a little, every day

It is the most widespread reflex, and the one we correct first. A veil of water in the morning, a spray bottle of water and oil before going out: the fiber swells, dries, swells again, and this back and forth eventually makes it porous, capable of taking water quickly and losing it just as quickly. Avoid wetting your hair every day: a complete routine every seven to ten days holds up better.

The comb on dry and bare hair

The formula that is circulating is false. It is not dry hair that breaks, it is the comb passed over dry hair without product. The Rituel Texture® begins precisely with detangling with the fingers on dry hair, the Chadian finger detangling. The Man Dol' Comb only comes after that, on hair coated with mask. See the two-step detangling method.

The layers that accumulate

A cream on Monday, a gel on the edges on Wednesday, an oil on the roots on Friday because it pulls: the layers stack up without ever being removed, and the buildup prevents water from entering during the next wash. We end up with hair that is both loaded and dry, even though we feel like we are doing a lot. This is why the complete routine begins with a gentle clarifying cleanse.

Heat poorly used

Heat is not the enemy, its use is. What damages is the device placed on a stationary strand, on bare hair. Protective drying is done after applying The Styling Cream, in small sections and in constant motion. Between two routines, open air works very well.

The correctionWhat corrects dryness, in order

None of these actions is new, and none works alone: it is the order that produces the result. You do not apply a mask to a loaded fiber, you do not pass a comb over a bare fiber.

  1. 01
Chadian finger detanglingWith the fingers, on dry hair, at least six sections, the root held in one hand.
  2. 02
Hydrating DetoxTwo washes: a gentle clarifying one without sulfate, then The Repair Shampoo.
  3. 03
Lengths & ends massageThe Repair Mask heated between the hands, section by section. Ten minutes of leave-in time, under a shower cap if possible.
  4. 04
Detangling with the Man Dol' CombOn hair coated with mask, from the ends toward the roots, back to the fingers at the slightest resistance.
  5. 05
Protective dryingThe Styling Cream on damp hair, then drying in small sections, in constant motion.
  6. 06
Seal the hydrationOne last layer of Styling Cream, a pass of the Man Dol' Comb, then a protective braid.

The pace is seven to ten days, and between two you do not re-wet your head. If you exercise, The Repair Shampoo alone is enough, up to twice a week and without clarifying before. See how often to wash your curly hair.

Night counts as much as washing. We undo the hairstyle of the day, we put a little Styling Cream back in emphasizing the ends, and we form six tight braids on themselves, never at the root. On top, a silk scarf, and a silk pillowcase: cotton absorbs the water you just brought and rubs the fiber all night.

It takes two or three routines before the difference is seen, and it is felt before: the strand slides instead of crunching. Well-treated hair is not tamed; it moves from the root and bends without breaking, and that is what the expression soft and supple hair covers.

When it is no longer just dryness

  • The scalp has patches, scabs, or oozing areas.
  • Washing or detangling is painful, or the skin bleeds.
  • Areas are thinning, especially on the hairline and temples.
  • Breakage becomes sudden while nothing has changed in your habits.

These signs call for the advice of a doctor or dermatologist, not a change in treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is curly hair dry by nature?
No. Comparisons under a microscope between African, Asian, and European fibers show no difference in internal structure: it is the geometry and mechanical behavior that change. The scalp does produce sebum, but it circulates poorly along a coiled fiber. Dryness is an effect of shape, not a fatality.
Does oil hydrate hair?
No. An oil does not contain water: it slows the evaporation of the one already in the fiber, and on dry hair it locks in the dryness. A drop of light oil remains useful on the ends, between two routines.
How do I know if my hair lacks water or proteins?
Gently stretch a wet strand. A fiber that lacks water barely stretches and breaks cleanly. A fiber saturated with proteins is stiff as soon as you pick it up and does not elongate at all: it is then the strengthening treatments that need to be spaced out, and not the water that needs to be increased.
Should I detangle on dry hair or on wet hair?
Both, but not with the same tool. What breaks is the comb passed over dry hair without product. The Rituel Texture® begins with detangling with the fingers on dry hair; The Man Dol' Comb only comes after that, on hair coated with mask.
Why is my hair dry the day after the treatment?
Either the water never entered, because the fiber was loaded with residue, or nothing was applied to hold it. Gentle clarifying cleanse solves the first case; The Styling Cream on damp hair answers the second. At night, a scarf and a silk pillowcase prevent losing the benefit.
