It's the product you buy with the most hope and use the least effectively. One evening, you rinse it after two minutes. The next day, you leave it in for an hour. Which is right?
When should you use a mask on coily hair? During every complete routine, every seven to ten days, on clean, towel-dried hair, for ten minutes—never an hour. How? Warm it between your hands, apply it from the ends toward the roots, and rinse only after detangling.
The Repair Mask is not a treatment you add when you think of it. It is the third of the six steps in the Ritual Texture®, the one that makes everything that follows possible, starting with detangling. Here is what it does for coily or curly hair, what it will never do, how to apply it, how long to leave it in, and how often to use it. To see where this step fits into the whole, our step-by-step tutorial details the six steps of the Ritual Texture®.
Tip 1What it does, and what it doesn't do

Coily hair is dry by design. Its curves slow the flow of sebum from the roots to the ends, and every turn in the hair strand is a point where the cuticles lift and the comb catches. A repair mask for coily hair, much more concentrated in oils than a conditioner, works exactly there.
What you notice as soon as you apply it is easy to describe: the hair strand appears coated and more supple, and it glides through your fingers instead of creaking. This is what allows you to detangle without pulling, thus maintaining length from one routine to the next. In the salon, almost all clients say it the same way once the Repair Mask is rinsed: the hair finally moves, and the scalp feels light.
What it doesn't do, however, also deserves to be stated clearly. It does not glue a split end back together or repair a fiber that has already broken: it only softens its appearance; only a cut removes existing breakage. It does not clean either. Applied to hair laden with creams and butters accumulated over ten days, it glides over the buildup and does almost nothing. This is why it comes after washing, never before.
Tip 2Its place in the Ritual Texture®
The Ritual Texture® consists of six steps, always in the same order: 01 Detangling with a Tchadienne comb, 02 Hydrating Detox, 03 Lengths & ends massage, 04 Detangling with the Man Dol' Comb, 05 Protective drying, 06 Seal in moisture. The Repair Mask is step 03. The two that precede it determine its effectiveness.
The first is detangling with your fingers on dry hair, even before getting into the shower. Many readers have read the opposite for years, and the distinction is crucial: what causes breakage is not dry hair, but a comb on dry hair without product. Fingers, on the other hand, feel the knot before tightening it, stimulate sebum circulation, and prepare the hair. The comb comes later, on hair coated with mask.
The second is cleansing. The complete routine begins with a gentle clarifying cleanse, then The Repair Shampoo. Two steps, not one: the first removes the film left by previous days' treatments, the second washes hair that has become available again. Without this double cleanse, the Repair Mask works on a surface that cannot receive it.
Tip 3How to apply a mask to coily hair

Squeeze out water first
Hair dripping with water dilutes the Repair Mask before it touches the fiber. Squeeze the lengths firmly in your hands, without twisting, until the water stops dripping. The hair should remain damp, not soaking wet.
Warm it between your hands
Take about a walnut-sized amount, rub your palms together for a few seconds. The mask becomes more fluid and spreads in a thin layer instead of settling in clumps on top of the strands. This is a stylist's technique, and it changes the amount of product needed.
From the ends toward the roots, section by section
Work the hair in sections, repeating the sections made during detangling. In each section, start with the ends, which are the oldest and most damaged part of the fiber, then work up toward the lengths. Massage the strand between your fingers, without rubbing. The scalp, on the other hand, does not need a mask: it is a treatment for the lengths.
Tip 4How long to leave it in: ten minutes, not thirty
Long leave-in times are an inherited habit, and they had their reasons. When available treatments were less concentrated, only duration allowed for a visible result. We left it in for an hour, slept with it, and compensated for the formula with patience. This reasoning no longer holds with a mask formulated for coily and curly hair.
The error I correct most often is the leave-in time. Many clients leave their mask in for hours, sometimes until morning, convinced that it continues to work as long as it is there. The Repair Mask is highly concentrated: ten minutes under a shower cap is enough. It is the favorite product of the stylists I train, because the effect is immediately visible on the fiber.
Ghana Elin, founderTen minutes, therefore, under a shower cap if you have one. It is not essential, but it keeps body heat against the strands and prevents the Repair Mask from drying on the surface. The rest of the time is spent on something else: it is not a step you monitor.
The leave-in time is adjusted more precisely depending on porosity, but it is a salon technique, reserved for trained stylists, and it does not translate directly to home use. For a reader who wants a reliable guideline, ten minutes is the right amount. As for leaving it in until morning, we do not recommend it, and we explain why in our article on the overnight mask.
Tip 5The step you skip
It is the most costly mistake, and it is almost always made to save time: rinsing the Repair Mask before detangling. Detangling with the Man Dol' Comb is done on hair still coated with mask, once the ten minutes have passed. The fiber is then in the only state where the comb can pass through without catching.
We proceed section by section, from the ends toward the roots, without ever forcing it. As soon as resistance appears, put the comb down and undo the knot with your fingers, then continue. It is only after this pass that you rinse. This step is not optional: it is the reason the Repair Mask exists in the method. Our article on choosing the right comb details what we expect from a good tool.
If breakage is significant or if the process hurts, stop there and detangle with your fingers only. The comb will take its place again when the fiber has become supple.
Tip 6How often to use a mask
A complete routine every seven to ten days, and the Repair Mask during every routine. This is the pace of the method, and it works for most hair types, including very short hair. Between routines, The Repair Shampoo can be used alone, up to twice a week if your lifestyle requires it, for example when you exercise, and without a clarifying wash beforehand.
Two situations change the use of the Repair Mask without changing the frequency. Before swimming or a day at the beach, wet the hair and apply mask to the lengths before exposure: it takes the place that chlorine or salt would otherwise occupy. And an oil treatment, often presented as a deep treatment, is not a substitute: once or twice a year at most is enough, detangling with your fingers does the rest.
On very damaged, colored, or transitioning hair, this is the step you must never skip. Not because it repairs, but because it makes detangling possible, and that is where most breakage occurs.
Tip 7What makes it useless
The five actions that cancel out the treatment
- Rinsing it after two minutes, while the shower is still running.
- Applying it to water-logged hair, which dilutes it before it can work.
- Dropping it on top of the hair, without sections, leaving the back untreated.
- Rinsing it before passing the comb through, and losing the step for which it was left in.
- Replacing it with an oil, which lubricates the surface without providing what the mask does.
None of these actions require an additional product to correct; only a different order.
