The Rituel Texture® step by step

  1. 1 Hair diagnosisA close look at your scalp, your hair fibre and your habits, to tailor every step.
  2. 2 Chadian finger detanglingA first, very gentle detangle, section by section, to preserve length.
  3. 3 Moisturising DetoxA wash that purifies the scalp without drying out the hair fibre.
  4. 4 Repairing MassageLe Masque Réparateur, massaged in to deeply nourish the hair fibre.
  5. 5 Detangling with the Man Dol’ horn combThe horn comb glides through the curls to finish detangling without breakage.
  6. 6 Protective dryingGentle drying that respects the natural shape of your curls.
  7. 7 Lock in moistureLa Crème Coiffante locks in moisture for soft, defined hair.

Sunday afternoon, the bathroom becomes a workshop. Two hours later, your hair is clean, detangled, and already dry at the ends. It's not a question of products. So, what is it?

The Texture Ritual® sets this order: six steps, always the same, always in the same succession, because each one prepares the hair for the one that follows. Here is what each one does, how it is done, and what is adjusted according to your hair. To have it at hand on wash day, our step-by-step tutorial reviews the complete sequence and the gestures to avoid.

6steps, always in the same order
7 to 10 daysbetween two complete routines
10 minleave-in time for The Repair Mask

I didn't invent this sequence of gestures. What I brought was the order: knowing why this one comes before that one, and what we damage by interchanging them. When the sequence is right, the client feels nothing. No pulling, no pinching, no that moment where you grit your teeth waiting for it to pass.

Step 01Detangling with the Chadian finger

Detangling with fingers on sectioned curly hair
The detangling with fingers opens the session, on dry hair and without tools. The fingers feel the knot before forcing it.

The session starts dry, without a comb and without product. This is the most important vocabulary point of the entire method, because the common advice says exactly the opposite for years. What breaks a curly hair is not the dryness of the fiber at the time of detangling: it's the comb passed over a dry and bare hair. The fingers, they meet the knot before pulling it, and decide to stop.

We work in six sections minimum, always, and never more than eight. We go up to eight when the density is high, when the hair is short and very full, or when it is very tangled. The root is held with one hand while the thumb of the other smooths the strand, little strand by little strand, from the bottom up. Each completed section is closed in a soft vanilla, which preserves the work until the basin.

Two situations require a deviation. If the hair arrives with wet roots, we dry the whole thing before starting: we do not detangle a half-wet material. If the scalp is flaking, we reduce the size of the strands. And if the breakage is significant, this detangling becomes delicate and is better entrusted to a trained hairdresser than improvised at home. Our complete detangling method details the handling.

Step 02Hydrating Detox

Two successive washes, never just one. The first is a gentle clarifier, without sulfate: it removes the film of treatments, sweat, and dust accumulated since the last routine. As long as this film is there, nothing we apply afterwards really works. The second wash, with The Repair Shampoo, intervenes on a fiber that has become available, and it is the one that treats.

This clarifying cleaning opens every complete routine. This is not a monthly gesture reserved for large accumulations, it is the first half of step 02. When the products have really piled up, we simply let the clarifier act a little longer before rinsing.

When rinsing, we press the vanillas between the hands, without ever rubbing them: they must hold until the mask. A useful precision for those who swim: the pool and the sea do not automatically change the next session. Before exposure, we wet the hair and apply a mask on the lengths, and then we resume the usual sequence. See how often to wash your hair.

One point of attention, finally. Peeling skin after detangling is not an alert. Patches, pain, or bleeding are: in this case, we interrupt the session and consult a doctor or dermatologist.

Step 03Length & ends massage

We wring out the hair, then we heat The Repair Mask between the palms before applying it. The gesture is done section by section, from the ends to the roots, by massaging the length rather than depositing the product on the surface. The ends are the oldest and driest part of the fiber: they receive the treatment first and in greater quantity.

Leave on for ten minutes, under a cap if possible. This is the reference duration, and it is enough. The longer times that circulate, thirty minutes, an hour, a whole night, come from a time when the formulas worked little and you had to compensate with patience. A mask kept all night brings nothing more, and our article on the overnight mask explains why.

The refinement of the leave-in time according to porosity exists, but it is a salon technique and is adjusted with a trained hairdresser, not judged in front of a mirror. For a routine done at home, ten minutes is the right answer. Last precision, against a widespread idea: fine hair, or a volume goal, does not justify automatically lightening the mask.

Step 04Detangling with the Man Dol' Comb

The Man Dol' Comb in buffalo horn with wide teeth
The comb only comes into play here, on hair coated with mask, and never before.

After the leave-in time has passed, the fiber is coated, softened, slippery. It is now, and only now, that The Man Dol' Comb comes into play. It goes down from the ends to the roots, without forcing, and as soon as resistance appears we put it down and start again with the fingers on this specific knot before continuing.

This step is not optional. It is practiced with the mask in place, before rinsing, and it is the reason why detangling stops being an ordeal. Rinsing comes after, once the hair is completely detangled.

Only one case makes an exception: in the presence of pain or very significant breakage, we give up the comb for this routine and detangle with fingers only. The Man Dol' Comb has wider teeth than the old horn combs, precisely because the old ones hurt. See which comb to choose for curly hair.

Step 05Protective drying

The Styling Cream is applied to damp hair, on the whole length: it protects the fiber from the heat that will follow. Then comes the hair dryer, by small strands, from the roots to the lengths and the ends, in bouncing movements. The heat is sustained and the device never stops on a zone. No brush. The tip is held between the thumb and index finger and dried last, very lightly.

This is the most counter-intuitive step of the method, because we have long advised to limit heat on curly hair. A short and direct drying, always in motion, treats the fiber better than lukewarm heat maintained for hours. The diffuser, it only suits rare cases on curly hair: it is not the reference tool of this step.

Two adjustments according to the desired result. For a stretched effect, we also stretch the ends. For vanillas or a twist out, we deliberately keep a little moisture at the ends. And between two routines, when we re-wet little, air drying works very well. On a very short cut, drying is up to you, according to the desired effect.

Step 06Locking in moisture

This is the step we skip, and the one that decides if the work of the previous five will last seven days or two. The Styling Cream is applied generously, we pass The Man Dol' Comb one last time, then we make a protective braid or vanillas that we leave to set before undoing and styling.

It does not consist of sealing with an oil or a butter. The Styling Cream helps to maintain the hydration brought by the wash, and it is the one that does this work. Between two routines, a drop of light oil on the ends can complete, if they pull, but it replaces nothing.

One confusion deserves to be cleared up. A protective hairstyle made after a complete routine, vanillas, twists, or braids worn for several days, is not step 06: it is a distinct service, which we call "Texture Ritual® + Vanillas". Step 06 ends when we undo the sealing braid and style. See how to make hydration last.

How often

A complete routine every seven to ten days. Not more spaced out: beyond that, the hydration set at step 03 is missing, and the products applied in the meantime accumulate without being removed. This frequency also applies to a very short cut, where detangling with the Chadian finger remains possible from about two centimeters of length.

Between two sessions, The Repair Shampoo can be used alone, without going through the clarifier, up to twice a week, if necessary. It was designed for that, and especially for athletes, who do not have to look for another solution after training. The rest of the time, we avoid wetting your head every day: it is pleasant, and it is precisely what you should avoid.

The night extends the session. We undo the hairstyle of the day, we put a little more of The Styling Cream back on insisting on the ends, we only pass the comb if the hair is tangled, and we make six tight braids on themselves, never at the root, tied with a silk scrunchie or knotted under a silk scarf, on a silk pillowcase.

The most common mistakes

They do not come from a lack of care, but from old advice or advice designed for other textures. Correcting them often changes more things than a change of product.

  • Pass the comb over dry and bare hair. This is the gesture that breaks. The comb intervenes at step 04, mask in place.
  • Do only one shampoo. The gentle clarifier is part of every complete routine, it is not a monthly appointment.
  • Keep the mask all night. Ten minutes are enough. At night, we protect our hair, without a mask.
  • Treat step 04 as optional. A routine without passing the comb over coated fiber is not a complete routine.
  • Spray a veil of water every morning. The fiber ends up more porous. Hydration is set at the routine, it is not caught up with the spray.
  • Do an oil bath every week. One to two times a year at most. To prepare the wash, detangling with fingers is enough.
  • Count on the diffuser. It only suits rare cases on curly hair.

What the method is not

This is not a definition method. The Texture Ritual® maintains the material, it does not draw curls to wear loose. For that, the house has a second registered method, the Definition Ritual®, distinct from this one and not its variant. We choose one or the other according to the way we want to wear our hair, not according to the state of the fiber.

This is not also a sequence to personalize freely. The six steps are not permuted and are not skipped. What adapts is the adjustment of each one: the number of sections, the quantity of product, the duration of drying, the choice of the final hairstyle. The sequence, it, remains the same for all.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many steps does the Texture Ritual® count?
Six, in this order: 01 Detangling with the Chadian finger, 02 Hydrating Detox, 03 Length & ends massage, 04 Detangling with the Man Dol' Comb, 05 Protective drying, 06 Locking in moisture.
Can you detangle your curly hair dry?
With fingers, yes: it is step 01, and it is done on dry hair. What breaks is the comb passed over a dry hair and without product. The comb intervenes later, at step 04, on hair coated with mask.
How long to leave the mask on?
Ten minutes, under a cap if possible. This is the reference duration at home. The refinements according to porosity are adjusted with a trained hairdresser, in the salon.
Can you skip a step?
The sequence does not change. Skipping step 04, the passing of the comb over coated fiber, or step 06, the sealing, is the most common mistake, and the most costly on the hold of the result.
How often to do it?
Every seven to ten days, including on very short hair. Between two, The Repair Shampoo alone is enough, up to twice a week if necessary, without clarifier before.
Do you really need six to eight sections to detangle?
Six minimum, always, and never more than eight. We go to eight on a very dense, very tangled or short and full hair. Sectioning reduces the tension exerted on the fiber, and it is the tension that breaks.
