Smoothing kinky hair without chemicals: what can't be undone

A client calls for a wedding. Four years into her natural journey, she wants her hair straight for one day, and "nothing chemical." The service is available, but a methodological error cannot be undone: it cuts the hair.

Going natural hasn't made straightening disappear; it has changed how it's used. It has become an occasional thing, often linked to an event or the desire to measure a length that is never seen. What follows is how we manage it at the chair: the preliminary diagnosis, the preparation of the fiber with the Rituel Texture®, the management of the heat application, and the aftercare instructions. Everything is decided before the iron.

2passes with the iron maximum per section
100%dry hair before the first pass
2 timesa month maximum, and ideally much less

Chemical and heat: two unrelated services

I understand women who have given in to straightening or relaxing: without guidance, the right techniques, or the right products, it is very difficult to stick with it. We do not perform chemical relaxing; we refer clients to a partner who specializes in it. What matters is that the client is informed before making a choice.

Ghana Elin, founder

The two terms are often used together in salons, but they describe different processes. Chemical relaxing permanently breaks the bonds in the keratin: the texture never returns to the treated part, and only the new growth retains its pattern. Heat straightening, on the other hand, only reorganizes hydrogen bonds, and this reorganization is undone after the first wash.

This reversibility is what makes the service so valuable, and it is what you are committing to with the client. It is not guaranteed: it lasts only as long as the fiber has not passed its point of degradation. Beyond that, the pattern no longer returns, and you end up with a result as irreversible as chemical relaxing, but without intending it. A poorly managed heat straightening is therefore an accidental chemical relaxing.

Why curly hair fiber is more exposed

A reversible straightening is being prepared: the fiber must be flexible before the first pass.

The spiral structure creates a weak point at every curve, where the hair shaft narrows. These are the points that give way, and curly hair has many more of them than wavy hair of the same length.

Added to this is a structural dryness: sebum does not pass through the curves and does not reach the ends. A fiber deficient in moisture has less elasticity, and therefore less margin against heat. Two heads of hair placed side by side on the same setting will not react the same way if one is flexible and the other brittle, and it is the diagnosis, not the device, that makes the difference.

Step 1The preliminary diagnosis

Three points are enough to decide whether the service is feasible, and they can be checked in a few minutes at the chair.

Chemical history. Even old relaxing, coloring, bleaching: on a fiber that has already been treated, the bonds have been stressed once before, and the risk increases significantly. A client does not always think to mention a relaxing treatment that only has a few centimeters left at the ends; you must ask the question.

Elasticity. Stretch a wet hair. If it stretches slightly and returns, the fiber has some reserve. If it breaks cleanly, it lacks moisture and will not withstand the heat. This test is repeated after the treatment: it is what tells you whether the preparation was sufficient.

Areas already damaged. Strands that no longer return to their pattern after a wash indicate previous heat damage. They will not go back under the iron without breaking, and they are almost always found on the top of the head and around the face. Our hair diagnosis guide details the complete method.

Step 2Preparing the fiber

Preparation of curly hair at the sink in a salon
Preparation takes up most of the appointment: the iron is only the final step.

Preparation is the Rituel Texture® in its usual order, without shortcuts. First, detangling with a Ghanaian comb, then with fingers and on dry hair, before the sink. Then the Hydrating Detox, a gentle sulfate-free clarifier, followed by the Repair Shampoo: any product residue under the iron will cook against the fiber and leave a mark that the next wash will not remove.

Next comes The Repair Mask, heated between the hands and applied section by section from the ends toward the roots. Leave on for ten minutes, under a shower cap if possible. A flexible fiber straightens faster, therefore in fewer passes, and that is where most of the safety margin is won. The second detangling is done immediately after, on hair coated with the Repair Mask, using the Man Dol' Comb and from the ends toward the roots: a knot caught under the iron breaks the strand. The method is detailed in our article on detangling a client in the salon.

Finally, heat protection is not an optional end-of-process step. The Styling Cream protects the fiber from heat: it is applied to damp hair, over the entire length, before drying, and not at the time of ironing. Protective drying is then done with a hairdryer, in small sections, from the roots to the ends, with sustained heat and always in motion, never stopping on one area. The hair must be completely dry: a still-damp strand will boil the residual water inside the fiber as soon as the iron makes its first pass.

Step 3Managing the heat application

The setting is chosen based on the fiber, not habit. The rule of thumb can be stated in one sentence: the lowest temperature that gives the result, and as few passes as possible. On a fine, colored, or weakened fiber, you go even lower, even if you have to tell the client that the result will be less perfectly straight. Precise settings for each device are worked out in training, on models, because they depend as much on the machine as on the hair.

Two passes per section maximum, never more. It is repetition that destroys, more than the setting itself: three gentle passes damage more than two clean passes. To achieve this, the section must be thin. A thick section mechanically forces you to go over it again, and that is where the damage accumulates without you seeing it.

The preliminary comb-over blow-dry relaxes the fiber and reduces the work of the iron accordingly. Then, straighten section by section on completely dry hair, working area by area, and do not go back over a section that has already been treated to correct a detail: accept it as it is or redo it during styling.

Heat damage: what you need to know how to say

If the curls do not return after a wash, the fiber is permanently altered. No treatment can repair it: only a cut removes the affected lengths. Announce this risk before the service, not after. A warned client accepts a lower setting and a less straight result, and she will be grateful to you for refusing what others would have sold her without saying anything.

What the client takes home

The service does not end at the chair, and the aftercare instructions determine both the duration of the result and the condition of the fiber at the next wash. Four points are enough.

  • Do not rewet. No daily misting, no spray bottle: water undoes the straightening, and when repeated every day, makes the fiber more porous. A little Styling Cream on the ends is enough to maintain flexibility.
  • A silk scarf at night, with a silk pillowcase. The hair should be loosely wrapped, never tied tightly at the roots.
  • Two straightenings a month maximum, and ideally much less. A client who straightens every week will lose her pattern, regardless of your technique.
  • A complete routine every seven to ten days, with the double wash and ten minutes of leave-on time for the Repair Mask, so that the fiber can recover between two passes.

There remains the question that many clients ask in half-words: what if they want a chemical relaxing? The company's answer is consistent. We do not perform it, we explain what it does to the fiber, and we refer them to a professional who specializes in it. Informing is not deciding for them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do curls return after heat straightening?
Yes, after the first wash, if the fiber has been prepared and if the number of passes has been respected. If the pattern does not return, there is heat damage, and it is permanent on the affected lengths.
What heat protection should I use?
The Styling Cream protects from heat and is applied to damp hair, over the entire length, before drying. Applied at the time of ironing, no protection plays its role: it must have been distributed and dried with the fiber.
Can you straighten a client who has had a chemical relaxing?
It is not recommended. Two processes combined on the same fiber multiply the risk of breakage, and the relaxed part no longer has a pattern to preserve. If the client insists, use a low setting, one pass, and a test on a discreet strand before generalizing.
Does a steam iron change the game?
It allows you to straighten at a lower setting and in fewer passes, which reduces the risk without eliminating it. The same rules of diagnosis, preparation, and complete drying apply.
What should you say to a client who asks for a chemical relaxing?
Explain the difference between the two services, tell her what the chemical process does to the keratin bonds, and refer her to a professional who performs it if she maintains her choice. An informed client remains a client, and she will come back for the rest.
